As a Plumber Apprentice, you will work under the supervision of experienced plumbers to learn and develop the skills required for a career in plumbing. Your role will involve assisting with the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems, while gaining hands-on experience and training in various plumbing techniques and practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting with Plumbing Installations:
    • Support senior plumbers in installing pipes, fixtures, and appliances in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
    • Help with measuring, cutting, and threading pipes, as well as assembling and installing pipe systems.
  2. Maintenance and Repairs:
    • Assist in diagnosing and repairing plumbing issues, including leaks, clogs, and pipe malfunctions.
    • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning drains, inspecting pipes, and replacing worn-out components.
  3. Learning and Development:
    • Observe and learn from experienced plumbers to understand best practices, techniques, and safety protocols.
    • Participate in training sessions and workshops to gain knowledge of plumbing codes, regulations, and new technologies.
  4. Tool and Equipment Handling:
    • Use and maintain plumbing tools and equipment safely and effectively.
    • Assist with the setup and cleanup of work areas, including the proper handling and storage of tools and materials.
  5. Customer Interaction:
    • Provide courteous and professional service to customers, including answering basic questions and providing updates on work progress.
    • Follow instructions and directions from lead plumbers to ensure customer satisfaction and quality workmanship.
  6. Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to safety guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
    • Follow all relevant plumbing codes and regulations, and ensure that work is performed in compliance with industry standards.
  7. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including time spent on tasks and materials used.
    • Report any issues or concerns related to plumbing systems or work conditions to senior plumbers or supervisors.

Tasks

  • Install domestic, commercial or industrial plumbing fixtures and systems
  • Locate and mark positions for pipe connections, passage holes and fixtures in walls and floors
  • Cut opening in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings
  • Join pipes using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement or soldering, brazing and welding equipment
  • Test pipes for leaks using air and water pressure gauges
  • Determine piping system requirements and pipe sizing
  • Measure, cut, thread and bend pipes to required shape and size

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Vocational training or coursework in plumbing is a plus.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a construction or trade environment is beneficial but not required.
  • Skills:
    • Basic understanding of plumbing systems and tools.
    • Strong willingness to learn and follow instructions.
    • Good physical stamina and the ability to handle heavy materials and tools.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.

  • Ability to work in various environments, including indoors and outdoors, and in potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Physical ability to stand, kneel, and crouch for extended periods, and to lift and carry heavy materials.
