As a Public Utilities Manager, you will oversee the operations, maintenance, and administration of public utility services, including water, wastewater, electricity, and gas. Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operational Management:
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of utility services, including water distribution, wastewater treatment, and electrical or gas systems.
    • Develop and implement operational procedures and standards to ensure efficient and effective utility service delivery.
    • Monitor system performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement necessary changes.
  2. Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and standards related to utility operations.
    • Prepare and submit required reports, permits, and documentation to regulatory agencies.
    • Stay updated on industry regulations and adjust practices as needed to maintain compliance.
  3. Financial Management:
    • Develop and manage the utility department’s budget, including forecasting, cost control, and financial reporting.
    • Oversee billing and revenue collection processes to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
    • Evaluate and implement strategies for cost reduction and resource optimization.
  4. Staff Management:
    • Recruit, train, and supervise utility staff, including engineers, technicians, and administrative personnel.
    • Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and support professional development and training.
    • Ensure a safe and productive work environment for all employees.
  5. Project Management:
    • Plan, design, and oversee utility infrastructure projects, including upgrades, expansions, and maintenance activities.
    • Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure project completion on time and within budget.
    • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.
  6. Customer Service:
    • Address customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints related to utility services.
    • Develop and implement customer service policies and procedures to enhance service quality.
    • Communicate effectively with the public regarding utility service updates, outages, and other relevant information.
  7. Emergency Response:
    • Develop and implement emergency response plans for utility service disruptions and natural disasters.
    • Coordinate with local emergency services and other agencies during emergencies and crises.
    • Ensure that utility systems are resilient and capable of quickly recovering from disruptions.
  8. Strategic Planning:
    • Develop and implement long-term strategies for utility system improvements and sustainability.
    • Evaluate and adopt new technologies and practices to enhance utility services and efficiency.
    • Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments to support decision-making and planning.

Tasks

  • Manage solid or liquid waste collection and disposal systems, train drivers in how to handle waste and ensure safe operation of disposal facilities
  • Manage the operations of a sewage treatment plant, schedule and direct maintenance of plant equipment, and prepare reports on water quality
  • Manage the operations of electrical power distribution systems, plan and direct the distribution activities of a municipal electrical power establishment
  • Manage water filtration, purification processes and pumping operations, schedule and oversee the maintenance of plant equipment and prepare reports on water supply and water quality
  • Plan and direct the distribution of heating oil products to retail distributors and regional storage sites
  • Manage finances or budget

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Public Administration, Environmental Science, or a related field. A Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., Professional Engineer, Certified Public Manager) is preferred.
